Friends of the Goethe National Museum e.V.

In 1910, the former Director of the Goethe National Museum, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang von Oettingen, founded the »Vereinigung der Freunde des Goethehauses zu Weimar« (Society of Friends of Goethe’s Home in Weimar). The society’s aim was to provide financial support for the house’s work, »to maintain the collection, to purchase additions for the collections of Goethe portraits, Goethe manuscripts and relics, to undertake structural expansions in the house’s interest and to accumulate capital, the interest that may be used to pay any assistants employed by the directors«. The response and the financial gains were overwhelming. The foundation of this association was a stroke of luck for Weimar.

The present-day Friends association has been continuing this tradition since 1982, and became a registered society in 1990. More than 450 members are from throughout Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, France and the USA. The society explores the life and work of Goethe and his contemporaries in lectures, talks, discussions and excursions. Depending on the financing available, it also assists with the museum’s current work, purchases for the collection, exhibitions, publications and a lot more.
