Among the many historic sites and museums administered by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, the unique Classical-period private theatre at Kochberg Castle is a rare jewel. Liebhabertheater Schloss Kochberg e. V. - Theaterbetrieb an der Klassik Stiftung Weimar, established in 1991 to promote the theatre, assumed responsibility for its operations in 2004. Since then, its board of trustees has successfully managed the Liebhabertheater at Kochberg Castle at both artistically and financially, producing high-quality performances without any regular public funding.
It is widely regarded today as one of Germany’s vibrant theatres. The programme of mostly Baroque, Classical and Romantic works comprises some 30 operas, plays, concerts and readings each season from May to September. Almost all of the productions are specially developed for this theatre by the theatre directors and a network of top-level artists and renowned ensembles. The directors place great value in artistic quality and cultivating historic performance practice to provide the audience an extraordinary theatre experience.
The Liebhabertheater is a member of the international PERSPECTIV Association of Historic Theatres in Europe and was added to the European Road of Historic Theatre in 2007, which has meanwhile become the European Union’s largest cultural project. For the first time in 2013, the theatre offered opera singers international master’s courses in historic performing arts from the Baroque to the Classical era. The events at Kochberg Castle also include the popular Kochberg Garden Festival in May and the St. Nicholas Market in December. The Friends of the Liebhabertheater are committed to preserving, maintaining and developing the castle buildings and, with support from the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, have carried out extensive renovation and restorations measures at Kochberg Castle and its theatre in recent years.
