TextLab Weimar – Literature in the Archive, Museum and School

The model project "TextLab Weimar" wishes to provide 5th- and 6th-grade pupils from regular schools the opportunity to creatively encounter the literary texts of Weimar’s classical period. The project does not regard literature as "finished", but rather as a dynamic process. For example, pupils visiting the Goethe and Schiller Archive will be introduced to the materiality of the manuscripts and their aesthetic quality – from the revision marks made by Schiller himself to Goethe’s Arabic writing exercises. In the poets’ residences, the pupils will learn about the cultural-historic context in which the works were created and received. "TextLab Weimar" aims to establish a close relationship between Weimar as a place of learning and school as an institution: The students prepare for the excursion at school and join writing and illustration workshops afterwards. The Classic Foundation has developed concepts and materials. The goal is to encourage the students to actively participate in the "literary process" and present their results to their group in a final presentation.

"TextLab Weimar" is the result of a joint project by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and the Lese-Zeichen e.V. (Thuringian Office for the Promotion of Literature and Art). The model project was funded by the PwC Foundation for Youth, Education and Culture 2013-2014.
