Liebhabertheater Schloss Kochberg e. V.

Theatre performances at the Klassik Stiftung Weimar

A jewel among the museums and historical sites of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar is the unique Classical-period private theatre at Kochberg Castle, the “Liebhabertheater”. A support association was founded in 1991 to support the theatre, and in 2004, it assumed sole management of its operations. Since then the board of trustees of the Liebhabertheater Schloss Kochberg has staged highly artistic and financially sustainable productions with great élan and success – and that without regular public funding. Today the Liebhabertheater is a vibrant, well-known venue in Germany’s performing arts scene.

The programme consists mainly of Baroque, Classical and Romantic works. Each season from May to the end of September, it stages approximately 30 operas and theatre performances, concerts and readings. Almost all the productions are developed specifically for this stage by the theatre management in cooperation with well-known artists and prestigious ensembles. The association places great value on artistic quality and the cultivation of historical performance practice, which makes visits to this theatre a very special experience. As a member of PERSPECTIV – Association of Historical Theatres of Europe, the theatre has cultivated a network of international ties. In 2007 it was added to the European Route of Historic Theatres, which has since become of the largest cultural projects of the European Union. The Kochberg Garden Festival in May, the European Historic Theatres Day in October, and the St. Nicolas Market in December complete the diverse programme of events staged at Kochberg Castle.

The Liebhabertheater support association is devoted to preserving, cultivating and developing the castle complex. Together with the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, it was able to initiate extensive renovation and restoration measures at Kochberg Castle and its theatre.
