Quarter of Weimar Modernism

With the Bauhaus Museum Weimar at the centre, a new cultural quarter is emerging in Weimar which recalls the exciting, but also ambivalent history of modernism from the turn of the 20th century to the present day.

In this new quarter, cultural sites and modernist landmarks come together to form a “Topography of Modernism”: the former Grand Ducal Museum, now the Neues Museum Weimar, the cultural, athletic and park corridor built during the Weimar Republic, the “Gauforum” of the National Socialist regime and future venue for an exhibition by the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation on “forced labour”, the “Langer Jakob” (Tall Jakob), a GDR-era student dormitory from the 1970s, the spatial installation “Concert for Buchenwald” by the artist Rebecca Horn, the new Bauhaus Museum Weimar completed in 2019, and the House of the Weimar Republic on Theaterplatz.
