Renovation measures of the service areas on the ground floor and courtyard areas
Until only recently, the Wittumspalais courtyard area was primarily the point of entry to the individual buildings of the ensemble and possessed few qualities that would entice visitors to stay.
In 2018 the Department of Cultural Education at the Klassik Stiftung Weimar moved into the Schönfärbe (dye house) and the Kammerfrauenhaus (court ladies’ house), both of which belong to the Wittumspalais ensemble. In the future, the courtyard will be refurbished as a venue for foundation-related activities and public events featuring a cultural programme and accompanying services.
The planned measures include ensuring traffic safety in outdoor areas, improving the infrastructure of the courtyard, and installing service facilities for staging events in the adjacent ground-floor areas.
To enhance the KSW visitor service, the museum foyer will be renovated to meet current standards and requirements. The measures include the installation of a new counter with integrated media. This will serve to improve the information services and accessibility of the museum.
A feasibility study was carried out to determine whether and to what extent the existing rooms meet the demands of the planned new usage. Based on these findings, a design- and approval proposal was drafted in consultation with the landmark preservation authorities, after which permission was granted in accordance with monument protection laws. In November 2020 the renovation efforts commenced. The necessary building maintenance measures, restoration of damaged stucco and baseboard panelling, and the renovation of doors and windows are being carried out simultaneously.
