Weimar Window of Time. Paths to Modernism

Development of a media guide app

In preparation of the exhibition “War of Ideologies”, students from the Humboldtgymnasium Weimar worked together with the Klassik Stiftung Weimar to create a media guide that identifies and presents the ambivalences of modernism in Weimar. Based on the thematic threads of the exhibition, the pupils developed themes related to specific sites in Weimar which they subsequently researched in detail. In a second step, they produced info texts and audio files for the media guide and selected suitable historical photo material.

In order to visually present such complex themes, the project integrated elements of augmented reality. Historical photos and films portraying forms of mobilisation, for example, were directly linked to the locations and venues as they appear today. This allowed the app to visually present information to users who access the corresponding written texts and audio files.

Following the project, the content created by the students was then technically implemented by the experts at Zeitfenster GbR, which received the Cultural and Creative Industries Award by the German federal government for the app.

The media guide is available as a mobile application for general public use, making it a central component of the exhibition’s accompanying programme. For their part, the students were able to design a publicly effective application in which they could present their research findings. These remained accessible to users even after the exhibition was over.

The media guide can be downloaded for free in iOS and Android compatible versions as of 2 September 2014.

This student project was jointly coordinated by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar with the Federal Agency of Civil Education.

Projects of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar are funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Free State of Thuringia, represented by the State Chancellery of Thuringia, Department of Culture and the Arts.
