Women have shaped Weimar’s history for over 250 years – as princesses, artists, authors and pioneers. They created art, promoted education, cultivated networks, influenced cultural life and ventured down paths of their own making. Between negotiating social expectations and securing freedoms for themselves, they were constantly confronted with obstacles while opening new possibilities for themselves and others.

Discover these stories in the upcoming Theme Year Women of Weimar. Exhibitions, tours, events and debates will offer new perspectives on some of Weimar’s prominent female figures and their lesser-known life stories.

Women Who Shaped Weimar

Why Women of Weimar?

Weimar’s history would be impossible to tell without mentioning the role of women. Yet long have their life stories failed to attract the same attention so often enjoyed by their male contemporaries. The Theme Year 2027 highlights the accomplishments and biographies of these influential women. We invite you to take a fresh look at Weimar’s better-known female figures and discover perspectives that have received less attention in the past. The result is a richly multifaceted image of the cultural city of Weimar.
