How to search the Fotothek

Using the search form, which you can find under the menu item "Digital/Fotothek/Fotothek online", you can enter any terms such as an artist, object or category in the "Search term" field.

Example:

Search: Goethes w = goethes wohnhaus

The search function will suggest search terms or search hits (image titles) as you type:

Search terms can be entered in both upper and lower case letters. You also do not need umlauts when searching. If you search for “street” or “Strasse”, for example, you will get the same results.

The search can be triggered after entering a search term and pressing the Enter key or clicking on the “Search” button.

If you do not select a search term from the offered suggestions, the list of results will be displayed according to your search term. You can access the object details by clicking on the corresponding title or image. Click on the “Back to search” link to return to the results list. Please note that clicking on the browser button “Back” will cause you to exit the search.

Combining search terms: Boolean operators

The Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT are recognised by the search engine as a Boolean operator when combining at least two search terms.

Example:

AND-search: Goethe AND Schiller AND Jena = shows objects in which, for example, Goethe is the artist and Schiller's garden in Jena was drawn

NOT-search: Goethe AND Schiller NOT Jena = shows all objects in which Goethe or Schiller are mentioned, but the word Jena does not appear

OR-search: With an OR search, you can simply enter several search terms and all hits containing one of the terms will be displayed.

Searching with wildcards/placeholders

If you are unsure of the spelling of a search term, you can use the * character as a wildcard for any number of letters.

Search: R*stadt

Result: Objects are displayed that contain, for example, Rudolstadt, but also Ruinenstadt or Residenzstadt.

Dealing with umlauts

You can use ö, ü, ä or oe, ue, ae. The same hits will always be found.

Groups of words

You can search for groups of words in the search field by placing your search terms in inverted commas. The terms are searched for in the exact sequence entered and only search hits that contain the word group in full are displayed.

Example: "Residenzschloss Weimar von der Ostseite"
