The Historic Library building

The Library

The Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek is a publicly accessible archive and research library of European literary and cultural history with a particular focus on the era between 1750 and 1850. In keeping with the tradition of a ducal library, its holdings contain collections dating back to the 9th century which are continuously expanded, catalogued and made accessible with current research literature.

Over one million pieces of media can be studied in the reading rooms or borrowed from the library. This includes some 150,000 items on open-access shelving at the Study Centre which users are free to peruse or borrow if desired.

The Historic Library with its famous Rococo Hall is part of the “Classical Weimar” UNESCO World Heritage Site ensemble and receives some 100,000 visitors each year.

„Libraries are the only safe and lasting memory of the human race.“

Arthur Schopenhauer
