Usage

In the Study Centre you can use or borrow items from the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek.

In the reading areas, which are largely handicapped accessible, we offer the following products and services:

  • 150,000 volumes of recent literature and editions on mostly humanities and cultural studies-related topics, freely accessible and categorised by subject area.
  • 17,000 borrowable volumes of fiction in the freely accessible novel library
  • around 1,000 current magazines and journals
  • Access to e-books and licensed databases and e-journals
  • Reference library on the history of the Buchenwald concentration camp (2,000 volumes)

The majority of our holdings is stored in the stacks. To gain access to these items, you must first request them via our online catalogue and retrieve them from the lending desk or in the reading rooms.

In our media library you will find a large selection of films (on DVD), CDs, microfiche and much more. Devices for using these are provided. Most films and CDs can be borrowed; you can find these listed in the online catalogue.

We are also open online for you. Numerous digital services relating to the supply of literature can be easily accessed from home. Learn more

Registration

With your user ID you can access the reading areas, borrow media, use our electronic services, or request books and magazines from the stacks. Learn more

Borrowing and submitting requests

Most of the books in the reading areas can be borrowed. The majority of the holdings is stored in the stacks. If you wish to borrow a book from the stacks, you must request it via the online catalogue.

If you cannot find a certain item in the libraries in Weimar, you may be able to borrow them through interlibrary loan.

Information and assistance

Do you need help looking for media, obtaining information or using the databases? Do you have questions about accessing our holdings or using the library? We would be happy to assist you. Copying, scanning and printing

You can make copies or scans of books and magazines found in the reading areas and older collections (published after 1900) by yourself. If you require copies from works published prior to 1900, we will make the scans for you. Our copiers are equipped with USB ports for printing personal documents. Learn more

Library introduction

We offer an introductory course on library usage to upper-level high school classes and student groups. The introduction takes 90 minutes. To arrange a date, please contact us by email (haab.info@klassik-stiftung.de) or phone (+ 49 3643 545-205).

Fees and charges

Private persons can generally use the library free of charge. Only institutions are required to pay an annual fee.

However, fees are charged for user IDs (if you do not yet hold a THOSKA chip card), making copies or borrowing books through interlibrary loan. Learn more

Photo archive

The photo archive contains image documents from the collections of the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek, the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv, and the museums of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar. The archive currently contains some 200,000 documents. Learn more about the photo archive

Samocca Café

The Samocca Café at the Study Centre offers visitors a wide variety of refreshments, including sandwiches, cakes, and ice cream. More information and opening times
