Projects of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar are funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Free State of Thuringia, represented by the State Chancellery of Thuringia, Department of Culture and the Arts.
Most books from the reading areas can be borrowed. You can remove them from the shelves yourself and borrow them by having them scanned at the lending desk. Non-borrowable books are marked with a red “Präsenz” sticker on their spines. These are usually reference works or editions of complete works.
All media from the stacks published after 1950 and books from the novel library can normally be borrowed as well. Magazines and journals published in the current year cannot be borrowed. Prints published before 1950 and items which enjoy special protection, such as manuscripts, incunabula or maps may only be studied in the reading rooms.

To make an online request, you must be a registered user of the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek.
In the online catalogue of the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek.
You can request any title in the online catalogue which is marked with the function <Request>.
The catalogue contains listings of all books, magazines, e-books, licensed databases, audio-visual media, etc. as well as a selection of manuscripts and incunabula.
Titles in the catalogue that do not have a <Request> button can be requested via haab.lesesaal@klassik-stiftung.de or at the desk of the reading room on the first floor. Please complete our application form and take note of the information sheet.
Find your desired item in the online catalogue and click on the function <Request>.
Enter the library account number on your user ID (THOSKA card) and password, then click on the button <Login>.
Click on the function <Request/Reserve>. The request is now activated, and you will receive information on where you can pick up your requested item.
When you register, you receive an automatically generated password which you should change as soon as you log in the first time.
Your password must contain at least six and no more than 12 characters. It can contain text, numbers and the special characters “–“ and “_” (dash and underscore).
If you happen to forget your password, you can request a new temporary password by clicking on the function <Forgot your password?> in the login window.
Requested items are delivered to the lending desks and readings rooms within 30 to 90 minutes on weekdays until 4:30 pm.
All borrowable literature can be picked up at the lending desk on the ground floor.
Books and magazines which may only be used in the reading room can be picked up at the desk on the first floor.
You can open your account by clicking on the menu heading <Library account> in the online catalogue. Enter your library account number printed on your user ID (THOSKA card) and password and click on <Login>.
On your personal account page, you can view all the items you have borrowed including interlibrary loans, any reservation requests and late charges if applicable.
You can extend the borrowing period for any items you are currently borrowing.
You can change your password.
You can cancel reservation requests online.
You can make changes to your contact information if necessary.
To prolong your borrowing period, you must click on each borrowed item individually and click on the function <Extend>.
When using a work station terminal in the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek, always click on <Logout> after completing your search queries and requests to prevent others from accessing your personal data.

If the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek or the other Weimar libraries do not have a certain book or essay you’re looking for, you can order it for a fee via interlibrary loan or the rapid delivery service subito.
We gladly accept recommendations for new acquisitions of literature which is still available for purchase on the market. We will promptly consider your acquisition request. Learn more.
If you are a registered user of the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek, you may order media via interlibrary loan.
You can place your interlibrary loan request online via the Common Union Catalogue (GVK).
If the work you are looking for is not available on the Common Union Catalogue (GVK), click on the link “Overarching Interlibrary Loan Network (VFL)”. Your search query will then be processed by all other German union catalogues, from which you can place your order online.
Conditions
You can register for the online interlibrary loan service and set up an interlibrary loan account at the lending desk during regular opening hours (until 5 pm).
Processing fees are charged to your account when you order media via interlibrary loan even if the media is not delivered. An order from a German library costs 1.50 euros. This fee covers up to 20 copies in DIN A4 format.
If the desired item cannot be found in Germany, you may choose to place an order from a foreign library. Higher fees are charged for international orders. More on fees
The delivery time usually ranges from one to four weeks. By logging on to your library account, you can check whether your ordered item has arrived. You will be notified by email as soon as your requested item is ready to be picked up.
You can either pick up the ordered item from the lending desk or use it in the reading room. The lending library determines the conditions of usage.
Borrowable literature and copies can be retrieved at the lending desk.
Special literature for use only in the reading rooms can be picked up at the reading room desk.
The borrowing period is stipulated by the lending library. You can request an extension with the interlibrary loan service up to a week before the return date, or in person at the lending desk. You cannot, however, extend the borrowing period yourself via the online catalogue.
