Scholarship programme of the Goethe Society in Weimar
With its scholarship programme, the Goethe Society in Weimar promotes academic projects that explore Goethe’s life and work, the era of German Classicism, the reception of Goethe’s works and times, as well as translations of his works.
The scholarship was named after Prof. Dr Werner Keller in 2010 in recognition of his commitment to the programme as the former president (1991–1999) and now honorary president of the Goethe Society.
The scholarship is awarded to German and foreign researchers to finance three-month research visits in Weimar. To be eligible for a Werner Keller Scholarship, applicants must substantiate that they are working on an academic thesis, dissertation, habilitation or translation. The scholarship provides the recipient 1,000 euros per month; reimbursement of travel expenses can be negotiated on an individual basis.
The Goethe Society provides single-room accommodation for its scholarship recipients. Candidates are required to contribute between 100 and 200 euros to their monthly rent depending on the accommodation. Furthermore, candidates are required to hold a valid foreign health insurance policy which must be concluded prior to leaving one’s country of origin.
The scholarship holders can conduct their research at the Goethe and Schiller Archive, the Goethe National Museum and the Duchess Anna Amalia Library. The holdings of the Thuringian State Archive in Weimar, the College of Music FRANZ LISZT and the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (collections, libraries) are also available for research purposes.
The Goethe Society publishes especially qualified papers in the Goethe Yearbook. To this end, the authors of the selected papers are expected to write a short final report on their activities in Weimar. If one’s research findings are published in the Goethe Yearbook, the candidate is kindly asked to mention the financing provided by the Goethe Society.
Your application must include the following documents: a detailed description of your project, a brief CV highlighting your academic career, two letters of recommendation and a list of prior publications.
The application deadline for scholarships commencing in the following year is 30 September.
