Fairy tale poets – Hans Christian Andersen in Weimar

special exhibition

Hans Christian Andersen – A Dane and a European. Denmark commemorates Andersen’s 220th anniversary in 2025 together with the whole world

To mark the occasion, the Thuringian Castles and Gardens Foundation and the Klassik Stiftung Weimar are jointly presenting the exhibition “Fairy tale poets – Hans Christian Andersen in Weimar” from 2 April 2025 to 1 November 2025 at the Kirms-Krackow-Haus and Tiefurt Mansion. The touring exhibition is produced by the Berlin-based Märchenland e.V., an association devoted to fairy tale culture in Germany. The exhibition is the result of their collaboration with the Royal Danish Embassy and was commissioned by the Hans Christian Andersen Fonds. The shared goal of these international commemorative events in 2025 is not only to present Hans Christian Andersen as a writer of fairy tales, but also to highlight a little-known aspect: Andersen was a universal artist and bon vivant. Although he became famous with his fairy tales, he was also a visual artist throughout his life. In addition to his writings, he applied his combined talents to produce a steady stream of drawings, collages, picture books and silhouettes. The exhibition presents his artistic diversity and creative spontaneity in connection with art. It features a series of the most stunning and expressive silhouettes, picture books, drawings and collages from Andersen’s creative oeuvre.

Admission is free of charge at both venues.
