Olivier Kosta-Théfaine / Giulio Paolini: MODERN ARCHEOLOGY

special exhibition

What remains of antiquity, and how do we view it today? In MODERN ARCHEOLOGY, Olivier Kosta-Théfaine and Giulio Paolini, representing two generations of artists, team up to explore our understanding of antiquity as a cultural ideal.

In European cultural history, there is no greater ideal than antiquity, and it continues to inspire the art world to this day. In this exhibition, two generations of artists come together to explore our understanding of antiquity at an especially fitting location – the Roman House – the first Classical period building in Weimar. Olivier Kosta-Théfaine’s works examine the modern ruptures of Rome, the “Eternal City” and place of Goethe’s dreams. He is joined by Giulio Paolini, one of the most influential artists of Italian conceptual art since the 1970s, who examines our relationship to art, originality, and reproduction in connection to antiquity.
