Nature on Paper

special exhibition

This exhibition at the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv presents valuable manuscripts that highlight the subject of nature in unexpected ways.

Goethe’s Faust dreams of fleeing his prison of books and papers for the freedom of nature, and yet remains forever banished to paper, nonetheless.

Dann über Büchern und Papier,

Trübsel'ger Freund, erschienst du mir!

Ach! könnt' ich doch auf Bergeshöhn

In deinem lieben Lichte gehn,

Um Bergeshöhle mit Geistern schweben,

Auf Wiesen in deinem Dämmer weben,

Von allem Wissensqualm entladen,

In deinem Tau gesund mich baden!

Weh! steck' ich in dem Kerker noch?

Visitors can now view original correspondence, poems, drawings and compositions from the archive’s most renowned holdings in the display cases installed in the historical manuscript room. Tours and an accompanying programme shed light on further details and create opportunities for dialogue.
