Language Eruptions

A Walk through Weimar

special exhibition

Interventions in the poets’ residences and museums

In the museums or exhibitions you are bound to encounter the subject of “language”. Our language shards in the poet's houses and houses of modernism introduce you to Weimar’s famous language artists and philosophers of the Classical period and the modern era in an entirely new way – interactively and with selfie backdrops.

Selected quips and puns by Goethe, Schiller and Wieland are staged in unusual contexts. These include neologisms, of which hardly anyone nowadays knows were coined in Weimar. Staatsbürger (citizen of the state), Weltliteratur (world literature), Milchmädchen (milkmaid) or Steckenpferd (hobbyhorse) are just some of the best-known examples that originated from the pen of Christoph Martin Wieland.

The tour takes intrepid language explorers to the Goethe and Schiller Residences, the Nietzsche-Archiv and the Museum Neues Weimar. Multimedia spatial installations and touchscreen stations invite you to immerse yourself in selected quotes and view them from entirely different angles.

Currently, the language explosions can still be seen in Goethe's (until 1 Nov) and Schiller's residence as well as in the Museum Neues Weimar and Nietzsche Archive (until 1 Nov).
