Wieland!

A World Spirit in Weimar

special exhibition

Two hundred and fifty years ago, the Enlightenment scholar, writer and translator Christoph Martin Wieland settled in Weimar. This exhibition of manuscripts, books, utensils and graphic works shed light on his many fascinating and multifaceted achievements.

To mark the 250th anniversary of the arrival of the Enlightenment scholar, writer and translator Christoph Martin Wieland in Weimar, the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv (GSA) will present his multifaceted oeuvre in a new exhibition. It depicts Wieland as a philosopher of multimedia communication. The spectrum ranges from his own translations of ancient and modern literature to his activities as a writer, educator and publisher and his impact on the general transfer processes between languages, media, arts and forms of knowledge. The exhibition reveal the relevance of Wieland’s thoughts on the current issues and challenges of today, such as life-long learning, international intellectual transfer, and an open culture of discourse.

The manuscripts, books, articles of daily use and graphic works on display highlight Wieland’s achievements and impact. The plurality and dynamic nature of his works are also reflected at the design level in the exhibition.
