“Book Cube” in the Study Centre

Study Centre

The Book Cube is located within the heart of the modern Study Centre, which opened in 2005. Temporary presentations are staged in and around the Book Cube on a regular basis.

The Study Centre was designed by the architects Karl-Heinz Schmitz and Hilde Barz-Malfatti (Weimar) and officially opened in 2005. Approximately 170,000 volumes are stored on its open-access reference shelves, and library users have numerous workstations and a reading room at their disposal.

On the ground floor, users can peruse the daily newspapers and view temporary presentations. These are free of charge and can be viewed without a library ID.

History of the building

The Study Centre was installed inside a redesigned historical building complex. The so-called “Red Castle” is the oldest and architecturally most interesting building. It was built in 1576 as the dowager residence for Dorothea Susanna, the wife of Duke Johann Wilhelm. Around 1630 the Red Castle was already being used to store a large number of books from Duke Wilhelm IV’s private library. Some of these books now belong to the holdings of the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek.

The Study Centre architecturally embodies the idea of a “single library”; the modern Study Centre and the Historic Library are connected by an underground book depository.

Projects of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar are funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Free State of Thuringia, represented by the State Chancellery of Thuringia, Department of Culture and the Arts.
