Results of the "Kunst am Bau" competition

for the Weimar City Castle restoration project

presentation

The Klassik Stiftung Weimar staged the “Kunst am Bau” competition as part of its renovation project “Historical Restoration of the Weimar City Castle”. The jury convened on 25 March 2025. All 11 submitted proposals are currently on display.

The former Residence Castle of Weimar, also known as the Weimar City Castle, is currently the Klassik Stiftung Weimar’s largest investment and infrastructural project. Last year, the Klassik Stiftung Weimar staged the “Kunst am Bau” competition for the future visitor lobby to be built in the east wing of the Castle. The task was to develop and submit a design proposal for the Castle’s entrance hall, taking its historical structural elements into account.

The Düsseldorf-based artist Andrea Knobloch was able to convince the jury with her proposal “Im Sturm” (In the Storm). Her artistic concept poetically alludes to the unique characteristics of the City Castle as a central historic location within the network of museums and historic residences of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar.

The artist group TheGreenEyl (Berlin/New York) was awarded second prize for its proposal “Lichtbogen” (Arc of Light) and Via Lewandowsky (Berlin) won third place for his artwork “Nach Dienstschluss” (After Closing Time).

Andrea Knobloch’s artwork will be created on site and installed in preparation of the grand opening of the first renovated section of the Castle by the middle of 2026.
