Library and lecture room with interior furnishings by Henry van de Velde

The Fight for Nietzsche

permanent exhibition

Permanent exhibition in the Nietzsche-Archiv.

The rooms of the Nietzsche-Archiv, designed by Henry van de Velde as a Gesamtkunstwerk (total artwork) will shine in a new light since 2020. The new permanent exhibition introduces visitors to Nietzsche’s intellectual world and an overview of its reception in art, architecture, music and philosophy. The exhibition sheds light on the Nietzsche cult which originated in Weimar, as well as the role that Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche played in promoting it as director of the archive. Even today, she continues to shape the interpretation of her brother’s work. Van de Velde’s vibrant interior design ideally expresses Nietzsche’s wish to embrace a new modern era. An interactive installation presents Nietzsche’s ideas in an easy-to-understand way. A digital guest book highlights the illustrious and infamous personalities who have visited the archive – a reflection of the ambivalence of modernism. A reading corner on the south-facing veranda invites visitors to delve further into the Nietzsche literature.
