„L'Allemagne romantique“

The Klassik Stiftung Weimar presents 140 drawings of German Romanticism in Paris

On 22 May 2019 the Petit Palais in Paris opened its new exhibition “L'allemagne romantique – Dessins des musées de Weimar” starting. Jointly organised by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and the Petit Palais, the exhibition presents 140 drawings of German Romanticism in France for the first time. The works, which date between 1780 and 1850, belong to collections which Goethe established for himself and the Grand Duke of Saxony-Weimar and Eisenach.

The seven sections of the exhibition are presented in chronological order with respect to aesthetic development. The featured works include portraits and genre paintings, depictions of castle ruins, compositions inspired by Bible stories and medieval legends, and most prominently, landscapes which combine idealism and naturalism.

Literature, fine arts and music underwent far-reaching changes during the Romantic period. Although the works of this era are stylistically quite diverse, they all express passion and a high degree of subjectivity in terms of perspective. Drawings became the most prevalent and innovative form of artistic expression, and many German artists established themselves as masters of the genre. In addition to Caspar Friedrich, Philipp Runge and Johann Füssli, the exhibition features drawings by over 35 other artists including Tischbein, Carstens, Fohr, Horny, von Schadow, Schinkel, von Schwind, Richter and the Nazarene artists Overbeck and Schnorr von Carolsfeld.
