What better place to explore the beauty and complexity of “language” than Weimar?! Not only have Germany’s greatest poets and philosophers left behind a monument of literature in Weimar; numerous contemporary artists continue to follow in their footsteps and engage in dynamic debate on the topic. In our Theme Year 2022, we address the explosive force of language, its limitations, and potentials for promoting understanding – in history and our present times.

  • Conversation lab

    The conversation lab is the programme’s central venue, located in front of the City Castle. Here, families, residents and the public are invited to participate in workshops that explore how we creatively and constructively work with language. In the evenings, the lab will become a salon for social gatherings and a venue for poetry slams and music. It will also be kick-off point for other events.

  • Language Eruptions

    We invite you on a journey that begins in the Goethe and Schiller Residences and leads us to the historic sites of modernism. On our way, we will stumble across humorous quips and sassy sayings, political and literary snippets from Goethe and Schiller in the poets' houses. Selected audio contributions await you in the Houses of Modernism.

  • Exhibitions & presentations

    In various exhibitions, we introduce you to the “real Nietzsche” and the wordsmith Christoph Martin Wieland, shed light on Ottilie von Goethe’s “courage under chaos” and present Walter Benjamin’s inspiring attempt at “Translating the World”.

      We invite you to join us in numerous upcoming events, workshops and interactive tours and rediscover the meaning of language and the myriad ways we use it.

    • Wieland Commemoration

      250 years have passed since Christoph Martin Wieland arrived in Weimar. In 2022, we celebrate the poet and revolutionary with a colorful program of art installation, exhibitions and events.
