Philosophiekreis

An event of the Philosophiekreis Weimar

Obedience, manipulation and the power of self-deception

The Philosophiekreis Weimar regularly invites participants to discuss key social, cultural and philosophical topics. Each event begins with a short lecture that introduces participants to the topic, followed by an open discussion round.

This time, our evening is entitled “Obedience, manipulation and the power of self-deception.” Inspired by the Genius Loci Festival, which took place this year at the Buchenwald Memorial under the motto “It's 5 to 33”, we would like to watch the short films shown there and discuss them together. The clips shed light on how people are manipulated and influenced by the media, social expectations and authorities - and invite us to reflect.

Where is the boundary between our own thinking and social conformity? To what extent do we allow ourselves to be influenced by authority and the pursuit of social acceptance without really realizing it? What role does the power of self-deception play here, which makes us believe we are acting freely while we are unconsciously conforming?

We look forward to your participation and an evening full of thought-provoking conversations - please dress appropriately, as it could get chilly in the co-lab.

The event will be held in German.

Our format is open to all interested parties and is non-partisan. We value diversity and welcome everyone, regardless of background or area of expertise. Participants can give presentations themselves and contribute their own topics by arrangement to enrich the panel with their own perspectives. Together we want to discover new ideas and gain new insights. The Philosophy Circle Weimar stands for exchange and reflection in a respectful, relaxed atmosphere.
