International Conference of The Bergen-Hamar Shakespeare Network (BHSN)
7–9 October 2026, Lecture Hall, Goethe and Schiller Archive
The international conference "Shakespeare and Visuality" explores the many connections between Shakespeare's works and visual culture, ranging from painting and portraiture to comics and graphic novels.
The conference is centred on the work of the network's founder, Professor Emeritus Stuart Sillars, whose pioneering scholarship has had a lasting impact on Shakespeare studies. It presents current research on the many intersections between Shakespeare and the visual. Topics include the use of visual elements in Shakespeare's plays, the reception and transformation of his works in painting, sculpture, and other visual arts, as well as illustrated editions of Shakespeare in different linguistic and cultural contexts. Further contributions address Shakespeare portraits, Shakespeare comics and graphic novels, and other aspects of Shakespeare's visual reception.
Held in English, the conference provides an interdisciplinary forum for discussion at the intersection of literary, art, and cultural studies. Scholars, students, and all those interested are warmly invited to attend. Participation is free of charge.
